Electricity: Bruno Le Maire goes to war against the European energy market

"Aberrant" and "obsolete", it is in these not very complimentary terms that the Minister of the Economy Bruno Le Maire described on Friday the function

We know that France has never been a big fan of the liberalization of energy markets, carried out in 2007 (for individuals).

But she had probably never criticized her organization so clearly, as she has just done through the voice of Bruno Le Maire.

Friday evening on the parliamentary channel Public Senate, the Minister of the Economy thus estimated that the current functioning of the single European market of electricity was “aberrant” and already “obsolete”, after however only 14 years of existence.

“We have to completely review [its] operation,” he explained.

The French are paying the bill in a way that is incomprehensible to them and totally inefficient from an economic point of view.

The Minister will "put the question on the table" Monday

In particular the very strong correlation of gas prices on those of electricity, which partly explains the surge in prices in recent weeks. “In France, we get our electricity from nuclear power plants and hydraulic power,” the minister explained. We therefore have carbon-free energy and a very low cost, but the market (…) means that electricity prices in France are aligned with gas prices. "

These have actually increased very sharply for several weeks, under the combined effect of the global economic recovery, very strong demand from China, CO2 quotas and the control of European supplies by only three countries: Russia, Algeria and Norway.

During the meeting of finance ministers of the 27 member states of the European Union on Monday, Bruno Le Maire thus planned to "put the question on the table".
