We are still far from the mark. More than two years after the launch of the “1000 cafes” operation - an initiative which aims to reopen or set up a multiservice café (grocery store, bakery, parcel point, etc.) in towns lacking local shops - she is struggling to present concrete results. The initial schedule provided for 50 establishment openings at the end of 2021, but currently only 28 have seen the light of day. It must be said that in the meantime the health crisis has seriously complicated things. The very first café of the project, inaugurated on March 15, 2020, had to lower the curtain the same evening, due to the first confinement. Followed by long months of repeated administrative closures that have undermined the coffee shop sector. Without, however, fortunately, dissuading the candidates.
Imagined by Jean-Marc Borello, the founder of the SOS group, number one in the social and solidarity economy in Europe, the “1000 cafes” operation received significant support.
