On average, this overdraft amounts to 232 euros according to a study by the comparator Panorabanques that we unveil. And half of individuals

The good economic recovery coupled with the massive savings amassed during the confinements makes the French less bloodless financially.

They are on average overdraft of 232 euros in their bank account, against 246 euros last year, according to a study by the online comparator Panorabanques, which we unveil.

“We are seeing a real improvement compared to 2020, when some French people found themselves in the bottom of the wave, notes Laure Prenat, CEO of Panorabanques.

Despite everything, still a third of the French consider their purchasing power low (36%).

Above all, discovery remains inevitable for many of them.

"

Nearly one in two French people (46%) say they are in the open at least once a year.

A figure also down compared to 2020, where they were 51%.

In detail, 19% are monthly, 13% quarterly and 15% once a year.

There are significant disparities depending on the profiles.

It is single-parent families or couples with children who are the most affected, as well as workers with incomes of less than 1,500 euros per month.

Conversely, single people and executives (over 2,500 euros per month) are in a much more comfortable situation.

Application fees, agios and intervention commissions: the bill climbs quickly

The first three reasons given to justify his overdraft remain a difficult financial situation (36%), an unforeseen expense (34%) and inattention in the management of his account (23%). The study reveals that 15% of individuals do not have a mattress and find themselves directly in "bright red". Overall, one in two French people uncovered exceeds their authorization at least once a year. When they do, the bottom is 285 euros, compared to 295 euros in 2020.

However, this generates significant costs.

"The overdraft is still very expensive," insists Laure Prenat.

Even more, of course, when not allowed.

»If you stay within reason, you will pay an average of 10 euros per year in administration fees to obtain the authorization.

Then, the agios vary between 7% (BforBank, Boursorama Banque, and Fortuneo) to more than 15% (BNP Paribas and La Banque Postale for example).

On the other hand, when you go into the bright red, the fees can explode.

Limit your bank overdraft fees

First, intervention commissions have been imposed, up to a maximum of 8 euros, or up to 80 euros per month, since 2014. In addition, the “newsletter for unauthorized debtor accounts”: free in 33 banks, it costs an average of 10 euros in the establishments that charge it.

Finally, the premiums oscillate this time between 16 and 21%!

“But it is above all the intervention commissions that raise the bill.

You can quickly tumble down and find yourself in a critical situation, warns Laure Prenat.

Only online banks don't charge them.

"

The specific offer allows precarious households to reduce the bill

To avoid getting into difficulties, it is necessary to "monitor your accounts", supports Laure Prenat. With the mobile applications developed by banks, it is now possible, for example, to install alerts when a critical threshold is reached. Above all, you must first enlarge, or negotiate, an overdraft authorization. As a last resort, you can, if you know in advance that the next few months will be complicated, take out a consumer loan, "without spending everything immediately, notes the general manager of the comparator. The best is to see with your bank to subscribe to a specific offer ”.

In place since 2019, it allows the most precarious households to reduce overdraft costs.

Beneficiaries of this offer cannot be billed more than 20 euros per month and 200 euros per year for bank incident costs.

As for people defined as “financially fragile”, they cannot be billed more than 25 euros per month for bank incident costs of all kinds.

This concerns those who accumulate five irregularities or payment incidents during the same month, who have an over-indebtedness file or who are registered for three consecutive months in the Banque de France file.
