Natural disasters: the bill could explode

2021-10-31T19:39:06.256Z

Over the 2020-2050 period, the amount of claims related to these events could reach 143 billion euros.

Already high, the cost of natural disasters in France could double.

Over the period 2020-2050, the amount of claims related to these events could reach 143 billion euros, against 74 billion over the period 1989-2019, indicates a study unveiled Thursday by the French Insurance Federation (FFA).

Knowing that the objective of limiting global warming to 1.5 ° C adopted in the Paris agreement in 2015 is unlikely to be reached, the FFA adopted a more pessimistic scenario.

It emerges that the inflation in the amount of claims to be compensated will come first from the increase in wealth, with in particular the rise in the price of insured goods and the extension of built-up areas. The rise in the bill will of course also be linked to the increase in extreme events linked to global warming.

In detail, the most costly claims for insurance in France should be droughts, which in particular lead to cracks in homes in certain regions. Their cost is expected to triple, reaching 43 billion euros between 2020 and 2050.

"

The balance of the regime of natural disasters is strained,

" said Florence Lustman, president of the FFA, in an interview with the Journal du dimanche.

The so-called “

 cat nat

insurance scheme

, partly subsidized by the State via the Caisse centrale de réassurance, is supplied by a 12% surcharge on the fire guarantee of all contracts.

This makes it possible to pool risks and standardize premiums and compensation.

Preserving this regime "

 requires adaptations

" and in particular placing "

 the emphasis on prevention

", indicates Florence Lustman
