If you want to get on a plane from Frankfurt Airport in the coming months, you have to be prepared for longer waiting times: In the winter months, the airport expects a good 50 percent of the passengers compared to the level before the Corona crisis, at least 70 percent of the flights should take place again.

The problem is that the traffic is concentrated on a few, particularly popular times during the day.

The airport system is loaded during peak times, said the head of the operator Fraport, Stefan Schulte.

The airport boss said that you could not hold the entire team in readiness for a single day's peak, which is quite close to earlier peak values.

There would then be a lack of personnel in the ground handling services.

According to Schulte, around 75 percent of the workforce is already at work here.

Rush expected due to travel to the USA

From November 8th, the airport is preparing for additional passengers who want to travel to the USA.

Because of the corona pandemic, then US President Donald Trump imposed a far-reaching entry ban in March 2020, which was reintroduced after a brief lifting by his successor Joe Biden.

Despite the efforts of the EU Commission and important European business associations, the USA stuck to the entry ban for a long time.

From next week tourist trips for vaccinated EU citizens will be possible again.

"We expect between 300,000 and 400,000 passengers on flights to the USA in November," said the Fraport boss.

Schulte encouraged passengers to understand delayed baggage processes or additional waiting times at check-in or at the security checkpoint.

Corona has complicated and slowed down every single process.

In addition, there is a lack of internationally coordinated procedures.

That adds up at the larger airports during the day, also in terms of punctuality.

Currently, only around 70 percent of the planes in Frankfurt are on time, i.e. up to 15 minutes behind schedule.

Fraport is actually aiming for a punctuality value above 80 percent.

According to its own information, the M-Dax group Fraport has already hired 400 additional people for ground handling services.

Due to pending security checks and briefings, only around 150 of them have currently arrived on the apron, said Schulte.

He expects 500 to 1000 additional hires in the next six months.
