For a long time, Deutsche Post was regarded as one of the problem children of the German economy: Emails and short messages on cell phones have replaced many letters, and the ambitious international expansion plans did not make any progress.
The corona crisis and the booming mail order business have given the group an enormous increase in sales and profits: Deutsche Post therefore raised its business forecast on Thursday, for the fourth time this year.
As annual profit before interest and taxes (EBIT), the Post is now targeting 7.7 billion euros, which is another ten percent more than previously expected, announced the Dax group on the occasion of the announcement of its detailed quarterly figures in Bonn.
As previously announced, the management has raised the medium-term targets again (click here for the company announcement).
30,000 new employees
In the third quarter just ended, sales were 23 percent above the value for the same period in 2020, rising to over 20 billion euros. However, the costs also rose, for example because of higher material costs and because the post office hired more staff. The number of employees grew from 550,000 worldwide to 580,000 within a year.
Deutsche Post wants to increase its operating profit to more than 8 billion euros by 2023.
Previously, at least 7.4 billion had been targeted.
The logistics group's business is booming thanks to high freight rates and shipment volumes.
The operating result, the consolidated profit as well as the amount of the free cash inflow, i.e. the available capital, could be doubled in the first nine months in a year-on-year comparison.
Deutsche Post had already presented preliminary figures for the past quarter at the beginning of October.
On the stock exchange, the price of Post shares made a strong leap: it has now risen by almost four percent.
