A first-of-its-kind study conducted this week in Israel regarding the extent of consumption of legal services and the considerations for choosing a law firm in Israel, shows that 60 percent of those surveyed answered that they had used legal services in the last three years. Percentages of those surveyed, regarding the considerations that influenced the choice of attorney or firm.

The study was commissioned by DCM Business Consulting and Development Ltd., which specializes in providing business consulting and support to law firms, and was conducted by the MarketTest Institute, which operates the MarketTest Index, a national index, and conducts market research for the leading organizations in the economy.

  • The study data show that 60.1% of all study participants, and who constitute a sample for the entire adult population, have used legal services in the last three years. 35.7% have used once or twice in these years, 10.2% have used 3-5 times and the rest between 6-10 times and more.

  • In the ten months of 2021, there was a large increase in the use of lawyers' services, mainly in real estate - due to the large increase in the number of sales of apartments, family law, labor law, high tech, insolvency and criminal (mainly harassment and sexual offenses). 88.7%) for lawyers were performed by individuals in private matters and a minority (11.3%) on behalf of companies, businesses or various organizations.

  • The study shows that the main consideration in choosing an attorney is, as mentioned, a recommendation from an acquaintance / friend / someone (42.7% percent), in second place (about 27 percent) is the consideration of the cost of the service and in third place (about 21 percent) is the attorney's specialization consideration. In the specific field.

Personal acquaintance appears only in fourth place with 16.7%.

This figure may surprise many who believe that it is a more significant weight factor.

In fifth place is the consideration of the professionalism of the lawyer (14.2%) followed by the reputation (13%). Here it is worth noting that it is not at all certain whether the interviewees know how to make a distinction between the two.

  • Perhaps surprising, but the data from the study show that the parameters of reliability, personal attitude, branding, location of the firm and the availability of the lawyer have a relatively low weight in the choice (between 2.4% and 6.1%).

  • In terms of the choices of the participants in the gender study, it appears that the consideration of choosing a lawyer based on recommendation in women is slightly higher than in men (46.5% in women compared to 39.4% in men) and in contrast the cost consideration in men is higher than in women (30.3 % In men and 23.7% in women).

  • Data on the level of education of the respondents to the research questionnaire may indicate that most referrals to lawyers are made by those with an academic education and as the level of education decreases, the number of referrals decreases.

Israelis are heavy consumers of legal services.

DCM CEO Matti de Castro notes that since this is the first study of its kind, it is not possible to compare the data with previous years, but the data show that there is no doubt that Israelis are "heavy" consumers of legal services. De Castro adds that from the company's professional experience over the past 12 years in consulting and accompanying business to small and medium-sized law firms, it can be said with confidence that there has been a significant increase in the consumption of legal services in recent years in Israel. He adds that the "patience thread" of the people in Israel is getting shorter over the years, a fact that also contributes to an increase in the number of referrals to lawyers in order for them to solve their problem for them.

Regarding the figure according to which the respondents give low weight to branding, de Castro notes that the reality is that a high professionalism is sometimes attributed to an attorney while this opinion was in fact determined due to the high branding of that attorney.

The study participants were asked to indicate from a list of considerations presented to them and which did not include a "recommendation", those that influence them most in choosing a lawyer or law firm. The therapist and the office staff came in second with 14.2%. The cost of legal treatment appeared in third place with 12.2%. Previous experience working with the firm appeared in fourth place with 11%. Openness / openness / sincerity on the part of the attending attorney appeared in fifth place with 5.7%. Additional considerations including speed of response, client participation in building the strategy, technological advancement and the size of the firm received only a few percent.

The emergence of the consideration of professionalism and the specific specialization in the field, are placed in the first place and by a considerable difference from considerations of personal attitude and the cost of legal treatment among most of the respondents.

De Castro: "The fact that the study participants mentioned the cost of legal treatment only in third place indicates that there is a willingness to pay more to a lawyer with professionalism and expertise in his field."
