The corona vaccine manufacturer Biontech generated a net profit of around 3.2 billion euros in the third quarter.

The company announced.

The profit rose to a good 7.1 billion euros in the first nine months of the year.

A year ago, losses of around 210 million and 352 million euros were incurred.

The company benefits above all from the success of the corona vaccine Corminaty, which Biontech produces together with US partner Pfizer.

Between July and September, the company's sales rose to just under 6.1 billion euros.

In the same period last year it was 67.5 million euros.

Overall, sales between January and the end of September amounted to 13.44 billion euros - significantly more than last year, when it was just under 140 million euros.

The company also expects growth for the next year: it has raised its sales forecasts to around 16 to 17 billion euros.

Another reason is the booster vaccinations that are now being carried out in many places.

Tax revenue could make Mainz debt-free

The city of Mainz, where Biontech is based, also benefits from the company's high income.

Instead of the planned minus of 36 million euros, the state capital of Rhineland-Palatinate will probably record a surplus of 1.09 billion euros at the end of the year, said Finance Department Head Günter Beck from the Greens.

He spoke of a "sensational" development.

For 2022 an increase of 490.8 million euros is expected.

This means that the state capital can pay its cash loans of around 634 million euros and will be considered debt-free until the end of next year.

"Nothing is more important than getting rid of the debt so that the city can run without being shackled," said SPD Mayor Michael Ebling.

Jobs and investments in housing planned

There is potential for around 5,000 new jobs in the next ten years, said Ebling.

He expects investments totaling one billion euros during this period.

About 30 hectares would be available for the development of a biotechnology campus with a direct connection to the university clinic and university.

More areas should be found.

The Biotech Mainz network should grow by 100 new members over the next decade - companies and actors from science.

The creation of additional living space and the sustainable promotion of mobility are also planned - for example, the expansion of the tram network and the establishment of an international school, said Ebling.

"We want to start renovating the Electoral Palace next year."

The city also wants to give something to Biontech and the other companies: The trade tax multiplier is to be reduced from the current 440 points to 310 and thus to the level of the neighboring and affluent Ingelheim.

The city council should decide on the planned reduction in November.
