A historic year! In 2021, private equity funds, which invest in unlisted companies, are breaking all records. Since the start of the year, they have acquired more than 12,300 companies worldwide, for a total of $ 988 billion, according to Refinitiv. An amount more than twice as high as in 2020 ($ 443 billion) and 50% higher than its previous all-time high. In 2007, the year before the financial crisis, private equity funds had invested $ 663 billion. Never have private equity players weighed so heavily in the euphoric global M&A market. This year, they are in charge of nearly 20% of the $ 5 trillion in operations. Last year they were only 15,5% of this market and 4.9% in 2009.
