The Uni-Klinik Charité and the Ver.di union have agreed on a collective agreement.

An important part of this is a fixed minimum staffing level for all wards with beds as well as for areas such as operating theater, anesthesia, radiology, central emergency rooms and delivery rooms, as both sides announced.

The collective agreement is expected to come into force on January 1, 2022 and end on December 31, 2024.

At the beginning of October there was movement in the stalled Berlin clinic strike.

Ver.di and the Charité had agreed on a key issues paper to relieve the nursing staff.

This was considered a breakthrough after weeks of protests.

If the minimum number of staff is not met, the nursing staff should be compensated using a point system.

For example, they can receive recovery grants, childcare allowances or time off in lieu of work, it said.

In addition, psychosocial care will be continued in the intensive care units.

There should also be important improvements in practical training in the health professions.

Ver.di intends to hold a member survey in the coming weeks.

On the basis of the vote, the tariff commission will make a final decision.

Both parties to the collective bargaining agreement have agreed a deadline of December 15, 2021, it said.

Carla Eysel, Head of Personnel and Care at Charité, said: "The negotiations were shaped by the spirit of sending a positive and important signal for employees in the health professions in this difficult time shaped by the pandemic." Ver.di Negotiator Melanie Guba said: "The collective agreement will help make the health professions more attractive."
