Brits drank less beer in lockdown, but more liquor and wine

People in Great Britain resorted to high-proof alcohol such as wine and liquor more frequently in the Corona year 2020. In the shutdown, the typical beer in the pub failed for many Brits, believes an industry association.

In the 2020 Corona lockdowns, the British turned to wine and schnapps instead of beer.

This is the result of a current analysis by the British Beer and Pub Association.

"The lockdowns and the closure of the pubs in 2020 meant that the British drank more wine and liquor than in previous years, but less beer," said association boss Emma McClarkin.

Overall, British wine and schnapps consumption rose by two percentage points, while beer consumption fell by four percentage points.

According to the information, beer sales overall fell by almost 15 percent last year.

The association assumes that beer, as a typical pub drink, is mainly consumed there - and welcomed the recent announcement by the British Treasury Secretary to lower taxes on beer.

The British government has so far vehemently ruled out a new lockdown with closings of restaurants despite the high number of Corona cases.
