Packaging: Tetra Pak prepares for the future

2021-11-23T09:46:58.574Z

A global objective: to get ahead of consumers' expectations in terms of environmental and social responsibility

More than a third of consumers now choose brands based on their commitment to environmental and social responsibility. But for Tetra Pak, this environmental issue is not a trend or a new challenge. A brick is already made up of more than 70% entirely cardboard and the group has launched a process aimed at offering the most sustainable food packaging possible.

This approach, called “Go nature. Go carton. Is based on a circular model which is based on 4 founding pillars: design (all packaging produced by the group is fully recyclable and the group wishes to free itself from fossil energy resources as quickly as possible), supply in raw materials (the natural resources used in Tetra Pak products come from sources strictly controlled - by FSC in particular - in order to ensure responsible and sustainable supply), production (in 2020, 83% of the group's industrial sites were operating at from renewable electricity) and recycling (in Normandy and the Vosges, Tetra Pak has joined forces with circular economy specialists who recycle bricks into paper, handkerchiefs and hygiene products).

Packaging: Tetra Pak prepares the future Tetra Pak

France, a driving force behind the ecological transition of Tetra Pak bricks

Tetra Pak has been a key player in the industrial landscape in France for almost 70 years and the Dijon plant celebrated its 50th anniversary this year.

The group has never stopped investing in its French industrial park.

The Châteaubriant site is now a showcase for the group's know-how in terms of production of corks.

On no less than 31,000 m2, the site produces 4.6 billion plastic caps each year.

In 2021, 100 million euros were invested by Tetra Pak to support the site's transition to the production of new attached caps, in response to new European directives on plastics.

The investment program consists of replacing part of the existing production lines and installing new lines to produce attached caps.

Innovation at the heart of Tetra Pak's DNA

Tetra Pak dedicates an annual budget of 500 million euros to research and development.

A major part of this budget is devoted to improving the recyclability of products.

This constant drive for innovation and investment has resulted in the marketing of new products that are more respectful of the environment.

Tetra Pak was the first company in the cardboard packaging market to launch paper straws in Europe in 2019!

In France, since March 2021, Lidl has been marketing the first brick of plant-based milk that is eco-designed by Tetra Pak.

This innovation allows the brand to reduce the carbon footprint of packaging by 19%.

High potential products fully responding to the environmental emergency and the need to develop a more circular economy!
