The Director of the National Center for Energy Research, Dr. Younis Ali, confirmed that Law No. 32 of 2021 allowing the purchase of electricity produced from renewable energy projects is a step that encourages significant investment in this field.
Yesterday, Sunday, Law No. 32 of 2021 was issued to amend Article 28 of Law No. 32 of 2010 to become as follows: It is permissible to purchase electricity produced from renewable energy projects that can be connected to the transmission network or the distribution network if the technical capabilities are available for that and according to the rules, conditions and capabilities that it sets. The General Organization for Electricity Transmission and Distribution is approved by the Ministry at specific prices issued by a decision of the Council of Ministers.
Dr. Ali explained in a statement to SANA’s delegate that the strategy of the Ministry of Electricity until 2030 includes implementing wind and solar renewable energy projects with a total capacity of 2500 megawatts. Therefore, it was necessary to keep pace with this strategy with legislation supporting its implementation, which is the goal of the new law.
To clarify, Ali stated that Article 28 of Law No. 32 of 2010 allowed the purchase of electricity produced from small projects whose capacity does not exceed 10 megabytes and which are connected only to the distribution network, while the new law allowed the Ministry to purchase electricity produced from large projects whose capacity reaches up to 100 MW and more.
Ali expected that the renewable energies sector would witness a quantum leap through the turnout of many investors to these projects in light of the urgent need for additional alternative renewable sources to support the electrical system.
