As astonishing as it may seem, if the notion of start-up corresponds well to an entrepreneurial reality, these structures had never been quantified according to precise criteria until then.

A task which has just been tackled by INSEE, which estimates the number at 1 million.

All have the particularity of being young companies less than 8 years old.

They employ a total of 1.5 million people, most of whom are men.

They achieve a relatively low average turnover of 277,000 euros, a very small part of which is exported (6%).

Finally, and this is a surprise, they create more jobs than traditional businesses.
