The International Energy Agency announced today that renewable energy will represent about 95 percent of the increase in electricity production capacity in the world until the end of 2026.
Solar energy will account for half of this increase.
Reuters quoted Fatih Birol, executive director of the agency, as saying that record increases this year in electricity production from renewable energy sources amounted to 290 gigawatts, in another sign of the emergence of a new global energy economy.
Birol noted that the rise in commodity and energy prices poses new challenges to the renewable energy sector while rising fossil fuel prices are making renewables more competitive.
