Even those who support the idea of green and cooperative transportation, can not help but see the problematic nature of electric scooters: galloping on the roads and often also on the sidewalks and pose a safety hazard to pedestrians, especially the elderly in them.

Until now, those affected by the power tool have had difficulty claiming their rights and compensation from those who harmed them. In front of them were riders, mostly young people, who risked personal claims, without a policy to protect them, such as the insurance required in the case of a car or motorcycle. But now, a change is on the horizon: the

insurance broker "Touch Insurance" has applied to the Ministry of Finance for approval to issue personal insurance policies for cyclists and electric scooters.

The insurance is the result of about two years of development.

As part of the proposal submitted by Touch Insurance to the Ministry of Finance.

The insurance will be personal, to each rider according to his level of risk, regardless of which vehicle he is riding (unlike vehicles, where the insurance is for the vehicle and not for the driver personally).

The monthly cost per rider is expected to range between NIS 70-150, depending on the risk that will be determined as usual by weighting a number of parameters, including age, average travel time per month, etc.

The insurance will include insurance coverage for the rider's bodily injuries in addition to third party insurance coverage for bodily injury and property damage caused by the power tool.

A touch insurance company said: "The need for personal insurance for riders is no less an emergency. Every week, cyclists arrive at emergency rooms around the country. 22 electric cyclists and scooters were killed in 2020 (this is the highest number of deaths from electric bikes to date) and many hundreds of Injured, who are left without any insurance coverage. I set myself the goal of bringing in the line for riders and for the first time we will offer personal insurance and not insurance for electric vehicles. We offer the best solution to this complex problem. "

There are currently about one million electric bicycles and electric scooters in Israel without insurance coverage for the rider and / or injured person by the electric vehicle. Recently published data indicate an increase of about 20% in the number of fatalities in 2020 and an increase of about 50% (!) Compared to 2015 in casualties. And fatalities as a result of road accidents, subject to the approval of the Supervisor of Insurance, the sale of the insurance and the issuance of policies is expected to begin in early 2022. Early registration will open these days for anyone interested in purchasing the insurance.
