Block handling triggers a monster traffic jam on the border with Austria

Austria wants to relieve the Inntal motorway and is only gradually allowing trucks to pass through the German border. The result: a huge traffic jam - until shortly before Munich.

Block handling of trucks in Austria caused another huge traffic jam right up to the gates of Munich.

The traffic is jammed for around 60 kilometers from about Holzkirchen to Kiefersfelden, said a police spokesman on Thursday.

This affects both the A8 to the Inntal triangle and the A93 towards the Austrian border.

In the case of block handling, trucks are only allowed to enter Tyrol in a very dosed manner.

Then traffic jams form regularly.

The police spokesman explained that this was now particularly long because there was an accident at the Brenner Pass.

The police are on duty with many patrols.

On certain days, Tyrol allows a maximum of 300 trucks per hour to pass the checkpoint near Kufstein and thus restricts the entry of trucks in the morning in order to reduce the load on the busy Inntal motorway towards Italy.

There has been criticism from Germany for years.

35 block handling days are planned for this year.

No relief of the burner in sight

The last time there was a traffic jam of similar length was in October, when the queue of waiting trucks stretched 50 kilometers.

Transport and logistics associations from all over Europe have called on EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to take action against Austria - albeit with no apparent success.

The EU had already failed to respond to a similar initiative in the spring.

The Brenner motorway is one of the most important and busiest transport axes in Europe.

In 2020 it was passed by around 2.3 million trucks.

To shift these transports to rail, 428 trains per day would be necessary instead of 30 today.

Relief is not in sight either in the short or medium term.

The new Brenner tunnel will not be ready until 2032 at the earliest; it will take even longer for the access routes in Germany and Italy.
