The FO union, the majority in the Aix-Marseille-Provence metropolis, joined the garbage collectors' strike in Marseille on Wednesday, initiated by the CGT at the end of November, subsequently joined by Unsa and the FSU.

"Collection is totally paralyzed today in the streets of Marseille"

, noted in a statement the public establishment, led by LR Martine Vassal which brings together 92 municipalities, or 1.86 million inhabitants.

"If the collection does not improve, with a minimum service, while the negotiations continue, we will have to resort to the support of the police forces and the requisition not to penalize the Marseillais and the traders in the the end of the year holidays are approaching

,

the community warned.

All union representatives were again received Thursday morning by the metropolitan councilor in charge of negotiations, recalled the community, astonished that

"the strike movement (is) hardened last night with the blocking of deposits and transfer centers ”

.

The metropolis therefore considers that

"the Marseillais would not understand that the situation is worsening and that garbage continues to accumulate in the streets"

while it

"insists on the prefecture to recognize the arduous nature of the collection professions "

.

The metropolis has set up around thirty temporary caissons in Marseille in order to reduce the surplus of the 200 tonnes of waste currently deposited on the public highway.

Ecological disaster

The previous strike by garbage collectors, already linked to the application of the 35-hour week, lasted a week at the end of September. The accumulation of waste in the streets of Marseille, coupled with an episode of red vigilance to precipitation, had caused an ecological disaster, with thousands of tons of rubbish washed into the sea.

An agreement to end the conflict was concluded on October 1 with FO and FSU, but not with CGT.

It provided for an hourly discount (an authorization to work less provided for by law to compensate for the arduousness) of 9.5% on the official 35 hours, in order to take into account the hardness of the work.

The agents would thus work 1,467 hours instead of 1,607 hours per year.

But FO now believes that

"this oral agreement"

has never been signed and claims a discount of 38%, or 1000 hours per year worked, more than the claim of the CGT which she claimed 20% hourly discount.
