Basque elected officials denounced, during a community council, a "project from another era" which "will artificialize thousands of hectares.

It was the last of the 27 communities to give its opinion on this issue.

The Basque Country agglomeration community spoke out this Saturday in Bayonne against the South-West high-speed rail line (LGV) project to Toulouse and Dax.

Elected officials voted by a large majority their opposition in principle to this project of 14.3 billion euros.

They therefore did not comment on the contribution of 45.8 million euros requested of them.

The LGV Sud-Ouest, which should save an hour's journey to Toulouse and 20 minutes to Dax, must be financed 40% by the State, 40% by local authorities in Occitanie and Nouvelle-Aquitaine and 20% by the European Union.

Departments that refused to participate

If the communities of Occitanie quickly agreed to raise 2.2 billion euros, those of Nouvelle-Aquitaine did not manage to gather all of the 1.7 billion euros that was requested of them in the financing plan.

In addition to the urban community of the Basque Country, that of Grand Dax as well as the departments of Lot-et-Garonne and Gironde refused to participate.

The Pyrénées-Atlantiques department also contributed less than expected.

However, some communities have made known their wish to "deliberate again in January", according to the New Aquitaine region.

A "project from another era"

In council meeting, Basque elected officials denounced a "project from another era" which "will artificialize thousands of hectares of natural and agricultural areas" and "will not make the wall of trucks disappear" which crosses the border since and to Spain.

President Jean-René Etchegaray, mayor (UDI) of Bayonne, estimated that the LGV would amount to "expropriating a part of our population which will no longer be able to find housing" because of a rise in real estate prices, already very students.
