The Ministry of Transport issued a decision allowing the creation of marine classification bodies whose mission is to set standards for classifying ships, supervising their construction, and subjecting them to periodic lists to ensure their permanent conformity with international standards.
In a statement to SANA, the Minister of Transport, Eng. Zuhair Khuzaym, explained that the decision will provide an opportunity to create national technical classification bodies capable of development and competition in the maritime labor market and to attract ships of various flags instead of resorting to foreign classification bodies of various levels, which limits the depletion of foreign exchange and opens the way for job opportunities. Khuzayem pointed out that the decision will be the nucleus of a project to build and supervise shipyards, pointing out that the creation of such bodies in Syria facilitates the periodic follow-up of ships, issuing certificates and conducting inspections to ensure that ships and their owners apply international laws and global standards.
It is noteworthy that there are hundreds of marine classification bodies around the world, the best of which are 12 international bodies called “Ajax.” No ship can operate in the sea without obtaining a classification, coordinating with it, and issuing certificates.
