According to the new building minister Klara Geywitz (SPD), Berlin will support the federal states with one billion euros in the construction of social housing in the 2022 budget year. "I am pleased that the negotiations between the federal government and the federal states for the funding year 2022 were able to be concluded quickly this year," Geywitz told the newspapers of the Funke media group. "The federal states will receive one billion euros in federal funds that they can invest in social housing." That is a good signal for tenants who cannot afford expensive apartments.

The federal states are responsible for promoting social housing.

However, the federal government can grant them earmarked financial aid.

One billion euros are earmarked for this between 2020 and 2024.

In addition, there should be another billion for climate protection next year.

Geywitz said that they are working "at full speed" to get this additional billion for climate-friendly social housing construction.

The energy-efficient renovation of social housing could also be tackled with this “climate billion”.
