And the Russian Federal Supervisory Authority in the field of communications and information technology (Roscomnadzor) said in a statement that the Magistrate's Court of the Tagansky District of Moscow imposed on Google and Facebook, which recently changed its name to Meta Platforms, a fine of 7.22 billion rubles and 1.99 billion rubles, respectively. More than $98 million and more than $27 million respectively based on their annual turnover.
The two rulings, which are the first of their kind, were accused of repeatedly violating the standards for restricting access to illegal materials on their Internet platforms by the two US companies.
The authority pointed out that Google and Facebook have ignored their repeated demands to delete multiple articles that sow religious discrimination, target the division of the multinational and multi-religious Russian state, contain false data on issues of great social importance, incite the visions and ideology of extremist and terrorist organizations, and include instructions on the production of explosives.
The authority stressed that these materials constitute only a small part of the materials that violate Russian law published by Google and Facebook.
