Competition Authority: New CEO Facing Great Challenges
At the last moment of 2021, the Minister of Economy elected a new director for the Competition Authority, Adv. Michal Cohen, who was the acting head of the previous authority.
Cohen faces some urgent tasks, but perhaps the most urgent of them is to disengage from investigative investigations and focus on real action.

A search committee established to staffing officers tested 14 candidates on Thursday, the Commission sent two finalists as a recommendation to the Commissioner for competition authority: Advocate " D. Michal Cohen and Dr. Oren Regby.
As stated, after personal meetings with the two final candidates, Barbibai decided that Adv. Michal Cohen would be the one to be recommended to the government for her appointment as head of the Competition Authority.
The appointment is expected to be approved at a cabinet meeting.

Michal Cohen, a law degree with honors from Tel Aviv University and a graduate program in addition to taking a BA in Economics with honors from Tel Aviv University. MA in Research in Economics and Law, with honors, program ERASMUS University compultense Madrid.
Since 2006 serves Cohen roles in legal competition authority Served as Deputy Attorney General (Criminal), Senior Deputy Attorney General (Civil), Legal Adviser and in August 2021 serves as Deputy Commissioner for Competition.

The Urgent Mission: War on Monopolies
The Competition Authority, until recently a gray authority in the Ministry of Economy, has become a household name due to the retailers' investigation, and some manufacturers and importers on suspicion of price coordination.
In this context, we witnessed a parade of senior figures in the world of food, imports and retail on their way to being questioned at the PA offices.
But the news emerges that a bit like summoning senior retailers to a shaming ceremony at the Knesset's Economics Committee, there was more desire here to show action than real action.
Although senior PA officials spoke at the time about the alleged "solid evidence", so far no results have been known, while commercial entities on the face of it appear to be a monopoly, are not declared as such and raise prices as they please.
Therefore, Adv. Cohen's first task in her role as head of the Competition Authority will be to break away from the populism that characterized the practice in the second half of 2021 (after a period of insufficient action, which was also addressed in the State Comptroller's report) and start promoting competition for the general public.
