It is a record that most drivers would have preferred to have done without: Last year was the most expensive refueling year since 2013.
On average, a liter of Super E10 cost 1.522 euros, a liter of diesel 1.385 euros, as the ADAC announced.
In the course of the year there were therefore "enormous price fluctuations".
According to ADAC, November was on average the most expensive month for refueling »that has ever existed«.
According to ADAC, diesel reached a new all-time high on November 11 at 1.572 euros per liter.
Super E10 was the most expensive on November 14th - a liter cost 1.701 euros, scratching the all-time high of 1.709 euros in 2012.
The price fluctuations over the course of the year reached up to 37.7 cents for Super E10 and up to 35.7 cents for diesel.
The cheapest tanking day in 2021 was the first day of the year: on January 1, a liter of E10 cost 1.324 euros, according to ADAC, diesel was available for 1.215 euros per liter.
After that, prices climbed steadily until November.
In December they went back a little.
The right timing saves money
The main reason for the price increase at the petrol station was the price of crude oil on the world market.
At the beginning of the year, a barrel (159 liters) cost around 50 dollars, then over the course of the year at times over 85 euros.
The ADAC advises motorists to use the fluctuations in fuel prices during the day if possible and to refuel in the evening hours.
According to this, petrol and diesel usually cost the most in the morning at 7 a.m., whereas fuel is cheapest between 6 and 7 p.m. and between 8 and 10 p.m.
"If you then fill up, you can save up to seven cents per liter on average," according to the ADAC.
