With the rising corona numbers, more people are working from home again, as an Ifo survey shows. However, the potential for working from home is far from being exhausted.

The fourth corona wave in December also caused the number of employees in the home office to rise sharply.

In that month, 27.9 percent of employees worked there at times, in August it was 23.8 percent, according to a survey by the Munich Ifo Institute.

The latest increase went across all industries, but there are fundamental differences - for example, home office is more difficult to implement in industry and retail than in service professions.

However, there are also areas in which it is difficult to work remotely.

According to the survey, the share of service providers rose from 33.4 to 38.2 percent, in wholesale from 15.8 to 20.8 percent, in industry from 16.4 to 19.7 percent, in retail from 5.3 to 6.6 percent and on the building site from 5.0 to 8.5 percent.

Ifo: 56 percent could theoretically work from home

Overall, the share of almost 28 percent is still well below the high from March 2021, when 31.7 percent were working from home.

"Not all companies apparently observe the obligation to work from home, which was reintroduced at the end of November," says Jean-Victor Alipour, an expert on home office at the Ifo Institute.

“The quota has risen again.

However, it is a good four percentage points below the high from March 2021. «

Only in the case of television and radio stations and in telecommunications, according to Alipour, did the rate increase again: 63 and 65 percent of employees there worked from home for their employer.

The Ifo Institute estimates that 56 percent of employees across all industries could work at least partially in the home office.

Since the end of November, home office has been compulsory nationwide again.

Employers must offer all employees the opportunity to work from their home, provided there are no compelling operational reasons to the contrary.

The employees, in turn, must accept this offer, provided that there are no reasons to the contrary.

The rule applies until mid-March 2022.
