Nuclear: EDF extends the shutdown of the Chooz reactor

2022-01-06T19:08:18.946Z

Their shutdown deprives France of nearly 10% of its nuclear capacity at the worst time, in the middle of winter.

The worst-case scenario is emerging on the electrical front.

EDF announced Thursday afternoon that it was extending the shutdown of reactor number 2 at the Ardennes plant in Chooz until April 20 and not until January 23 as initially planned.

After checking, the electrician detected the same generic fault on an emergency cooling circuit as that observed on two other reactors of the same type, at the Civaux plant (Vienne).

“The repair solution is being studied”

with the Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN) for the Chooz reactor, specifies EDF.

The shutdown of nuclear reactors falters EDF

The two Chooz reactors were shut down in mid-December, after the discovery of a potentially generic problem on the twin Civaux reactors. These reactors, the N4, are the most powerful operated by EDF. Their shutdown deprives France of nearly 10% of its nuclear capacity at the worst time, in the middle of winter. This led to a surge in electricity prices in wholesale markets in mid-December, when these were already breaking records.

In order to limit the increase for households and businesses, the government is discussing with EDF an increase in the volumes of nuclear electricity sold at cost price under the Arenh system.

It is planned to increase these volumes by 30 terawatt hours, reports

Le Parisien

.

The price of the megawatt hour should at the same time be revalued from 42 to 46.50 euros according to our information.

The executive still has to arbitrate on these elements.

In addition, the new EPR 2 nuclear reactors that France plans to build could be put into service

"in 2035-2037"

, said Thursday Bérangère Abba, Secretary of State to the Minister for Ecological Transition.
