Another indication of the deteriorating state of the economy is obtained today with the employment data published by the Central Bureau of Statistics, which show that the unemployment rate continues to fall and stands - as of the second half of December - at 4.1% and about 177 thousand people.

This is compared to 4.6% in November, which is about 197,000 people.

The percentage of the labor force of the "non-participants in the labor force" who stopped working due to dismissal or closure of the workplace from March 2020, including the employed who were temporarily absent from work all week due to reasons related to the Corona virus and the unemployed, stands at 6.0%. 6.5% in the previous month and about 282,000 people.

Despite the encouraging figure, it should be remembered that most of the omicron effects were noticeable in the economy mainly during January, so it may be worth waiting a bit with the celebrations before another small but significant "V" can be marked in the economy's recovery from the virus and its consequences.

Excluding omicron

Regarding the effects of the corona, the data show that the employment rate does not include those temporarily absent from work all week for reasons related to the corona, which stands at 60.1%, compared with 60.2% in the previous month.

As mentioned - by the way Corona - the survey does not yet express the impact of variant Omicron on the economy, as this is mainly evident in January 2022, for which there are no official data yet.

The Labor Force Survey is the main source of information on the labor force in Israel and is regularly conducted by the Central Bureau of Statistics.

In the second half of December 2021, about 8,400 people aged 15 and over were interviewed on a regular basis.

In December 2021, about 17,100 people aged 15 and over were interviewed.

The survey population includes the permanent residents of the State of Israel, tourists and temporary residents staying in Israel for more than one year in a row.

The survey allows tracking the development of the labor force, its size and characteristics, the extent of unemployment and more.
