2022-01-18T11:06:40.626Z

Sustainable professions are on the rise: companies need them to meet their objectives in terms of social and environmental responsibility. Birdeo, a pioneer recruitment firm in the sector, has identified five of these professions that are recruiting, and where talent is lacking.

"Raison d'être", "company with a mission", "B Corp", "impact"... Labels and statutes are multiplying to frame and attest to the commitment of companies in terms of social and environmental responsibility.

Under the double pressure of the law and of increasingly demanding consumers, the economic world is increasing its efforts - or signals - to show its commitment.

With, in sight, the French ambition to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

Decarbonization Manager

Transversal and touches on everything, this position's main mission is "to rethink the offer of services or products of a company in order to reduce the carbon footprint of its activity as much as possible", explains Caroline Renoux. This implies an ability to work with several departments of the same company and to federate teams from diverse backgrounds. It is also important to master the tools for measuring impact, carbon footprint and building a strategy to offset greenhouse gas emissions - therefore to be comfortable with data. Skills “particularly in demand in the transport, construction and infrastructure sectors”, underlines the founder of Birdeo. These profiles, recruited at Bac+5 with a specialization in the environment or in social and environmental responsibility (CSR), can expect a gross annual salary of 45,000 to 55,000 euros.

Extra-financial performance reporting officer

Impact measurement is one of the sinews of war in terms of ecological transition.

In 2021, the European Union began a legislative reform and opened the site of a new directive called Corporate sustainability reporting (CSRD), which aims to improve the assessment of companies according to Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) criteria. .

The stakes are high: it is a question of establishing models as precise as those used for financial information, of harmonizing the information, of making it readable and accessible...

“With this CSRD directive, the position of extra-financial performance reporting officer is becoming, in fact, more and more strategic within organisations, emphasizes Caroline Renoux. Its role is no longer just to analyze data, it must now have the ability to understand it and use it to help decision-making for all of the company's businesses.” All this in a context marked by rapidly changing regulations.

For these positions, recruiters are looking for engineers or business school graduates with Bac+5, specialists in CSR or market finance.

They expect them to be comfortable with regulatory monitoring, financial data, project management, but also great rigor and an ability to simplify complex information.

All this, again, for an average salary of 45,000 to 55,000 euros per year.

Responsible digital manager

From the production of devices, full of rare metals, to messaging systems and streaming, technology pollutes. In France, in 2019, the digital ecosystem was responsible for the emission of 15 tons of CO2 equivalent, according to a Senate report, or 2% of all French emissions. Globally, various studies attribute to digital technology between 2 and 4% of total emissions - compared to 2.5% for air transport, according to a report by the federation of associations Réseau Action Climat also published in 2019. In France, several laws came into force on January 1, 2022 to fight against digital pollution, in particular by imposing greater transparency on companies in the sector, including Gafam.

In short, the pressure is mounting. "This is THE big challenge for the coming months," insists the founder of Birdeo, and not just for specialized companies. All are increasingly concerned about the impact of computers, mobile phones, emails or Cloud servers that their employees use on a daily basis. “The objective of the responsible digital manager is thus to be able to measure this impact in order to be able to define a more carbon-neutral and virtuous digital strategy, from the choice of IT equipment to all the technological management thought around: video, cloud, email …”, lists Caroline Renoux. The desired profile? An engineer, Bac+5, specialist in the calculation of environmental impacts, with a good knowledge of internal company tools and able to work with foreign colleagues or partners. Candidates can expect to earn between 50,000 and 60,000 euros per year on average.

Biodiversity project manager

The preservation and restoration of biodiversity is one of the keystones of the climate crisis... and of the responsibility of companies, whose activities too often harm natural ecosystems.

Here too, a sustainable transition involves the chain from one end to the other.

Hence a position as a cross-functional project manager, able to review all aspects of a company to assess their impact and open up greener paths.

The future recruits, once again, will be specialized engineers, at master's level, capable of managing complex projects, of popularizing scientific information and of convincing the greatest number.

This will earn them a remuneration of 45,000 to 55,000 euros annually.

ESG Data Analyst

Just as they are interested in data related to consumer behavior, companies recruit analysts responsible for collecting, processing and translating data related to impact and sustainability. "The ESG data analyst participates in the development of new tools and models, in close collaboration with the various teams", explains Caroline Renoux. Like his colleague in charge of reporting, the analyst must be comfortable with ESG regulations, financial modeling and data management. Employers are therefore interested in engineers, but also in business school graduates specializing in finance, or candidates with master's degrees in Statistics and Data Science. Here too, the average salary varies from 45,000 to 55,000 euros annually. And,at the crossroads between Tech and sustainable development, we can undoubtedly bet on good long-term prospects.
