The Israel Manufacturers' Association has submitted a request to the National Labor Court, requesting that it prevent the strike at the seaports, announced by the Histadrut.

The strike is planned for the beginning of next month, that is - for the middle of next week.

The request submitted to the court reads: "The expected strike is another nail in the coffin of maritime traffic. Israeli ports are a gateway for most goods entering and leaving Israel."

It is further claimed in the application that the estimated cost of direct damage to industry and the Israeli economy from a one-week strike in the ports is about 350 million.

Output decreased, waiting times lengthened

The official reason for the announcement of the planned strike concerns the state's intention to use the new seaports for packages to unload cargo. This is in stark contrast to the understandings reached with the port workers as part of the negotiations for the construction of the private seaports in Ashdod and Haifa.

A few days ago, we brought here the words of Avi Edri, chairman of the Histadrut's Transportation Workers' Union who was a guest on journalist Liat Ron's program on Radio North 104.5 FM and said: "We have explicitly agreed with the state that no general cargo will enter the new ports Repeat it so that you can return to the negotiating table and say 'we regret it, we also want to bring general cargo to the new ports'. "So all the negotiations that we have been working on for eight difficult years have reopened."

On the other hand, the Manufacturers' Association cited data from a document published last September by the Ministry of Finance's chief economist, Shira Greenberg, according to which congestion in Israeli ports has increased and that long waiting times in ports are due to rising demand.

For example, the average stay of a ship in the ports of Haifa and Ashdod in 2021 increased by about 46 hours compared to 2019.

In contrast, the average output per crew hour in the ports of Haifa and Ashdod decreased by an average of 11% in 2021 (here too the comparison is for 2019).

At the end of the application, it was written: "Ports strikes and congestion have very significant consequences for the Israeli economy. The damage to exports and imports will be reflected in all industries that depend on import inputs and the effects may also reach the private consumer." .
