German trade union federation: Yasmin Fahimi is to become chairwoman

In May, the successor to DGB boss Reiner Hoffmann will be elected. The most promising candidate is apparently the former general secretary of the SPD. She is considered a left-wing social democrat.

After the retirement of Reiner Hoffmann as federal chairman of the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB), the SPD politician Yasmin Fahimi is to become his successor.

This was announced by the DGB federal executive board.

In May, Hoffmann's successor will be elected at the federal congress of the DGB.

According to the DGB, Elke Hannack was again nominated for her position as deputy chairwoman.

According to the information, Anja Piel and Stefan Körzell were also nominated for another term as members of the executive federal board.

There had been speculation about the successor plan at the DGB for months.

In an interview with the »Süddeutsche Zeitung«, Hoffmann recently said: »We have recognized that we have to become more feminine and younger.« It was not only because of this statement that it was expected that a woman would become chairperson for the first time.

Fahimi was Secretary General of the SPD between 2014 and 2015.

The 54-year-old has been in the Bundestag for the SPD since 2017 and is a member of the Parliamentary Left of the Social Democrats.

The chemist was union secretary at the mining, chemical and energy industry union (IG BCE) and also state secretary at the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs (BMAS) before moving into the Bundestag in October 2017.
