The World Trade Organization today authorized China to impose countervailing tariffs worth $654 million annually on goods from the United States in a 10-year case.
"In light of the discussions by the parties and the evidence received in the framework of these proceedings, it has been issued by the WTO's arbitration panel that China can request permission from the Dispute Settlement Panel to suspend concessions or other obligations at a level not exceeding 645.12 million dollars annually," Reuters reported. .
On the other hand, the United States was quick to condemn the decision, as a spokesman for the US Trade Representative, Adam Hodge, said, "The decision is deeply disappointing."
China went to the WTO in 2012 to challenge tariffs imposed by the United States between 2008 and 2012 on 22 Chinese products, claiming that they were receiving government subsidies.
