One year after the entry into force of the new border between the United Kingdom and the European Union, an initial assessment of the effects of Brexit on trade can be drawn.

Over the first ten months of 2021 (latest figures available), British exports to the European Union fell by 29%, compared to their level in 2019 (before the pandemic).
In the opposite direction, from Europe to the United Kingdom, the decline is 15%, according to data communicated by Bercy during a conference organized Thursday as part of the French presidency of the European Union.

However, this marks a recovery from the decline in the first quarter of 2021 (36% decline in UK exports and 20% decline in imports).
The period is still marked by the disruptions linked to the pandemic.
That said, this stall can be compared to a return to normal in trade between the European Union and the rest of the world, excluding the United Kingdom.
