The Rüsselsheim carmaker Opel wants to offer each of its models as an electric car in two years.
This is part of the plan to only offer electric cars in Europe from 2028, Opel boss Uwe Hochschurtz told the Augsburger Allgemeine on Friday.
"Due to the framework conditions set by politics, it is now clear in Europe that combustion engines have an expiration date."
In particular, Opel wants to increase the range and charging speed of its electric models.
"We are working on the fact that an Opel can be charged for 32 kilometers in one minute," Hochschurtz told the newspaper.
"I reckon that this will be the case with Opel in the middle of the decade." For the future, the manufacturer is also aiming for ranges of 500 to 800 kilometers, depending on the car.
The company is already delivering electric cars faster than combustion engines, as Hochschurtz said.
"So we primarily serve electric vehicles with chips." In this way, Opel also wants to contribute to the growth in the proportion of electric cars in Germany and Europe.
As a special model, Opel wants to resurrect its cult model Manta as an electric model more than three decades after production stopped.
"We want to revive the Manta as a purely electric car in the middle of this decade," said the company boss.
The first drawings of the new model already exist.
