Every Saturday has a Saturday night: the violent battle of the El Al Pilots Committee

A few months ago, EL AL's management made a business decision: to stop Sun Dor flights on Saturday.

Although the decision was made on a business basis and I did not go, the fact that the Rosenberg family, the controlling owner of the company, is ultra-Orthodox, caused the pilots' committee to paint the decision as extremism and harm EL AL's rehabilitation efforts.

Decades ago, El Al decided to stop its flights on Saturday.

Although El Al lost the profit on flights on weekends, it benefited the traditional, religious and ultra-Orthodox audience, who saw the cancellation of flights on Saturday as an added value.

It should be noted that he did not completely give up operating income on weekends: the company's cargo activity continued as a series and the activity of its subsidiary, Sun-Dor, which was an attempt by the company to compete in the charter flights market, later called "Low Cost".

The flights may not have been branded under the El Al name, but the crew on the Sun Dor planes was the company's regular crew.

A few months ago, as part of its recovery plan, the company decided to completely stop passenger flights on Saturday, including those of Sun Dor, as after nearly two years of Corona, the discounted airline market provider hit hard, old companies began competing for the few passengers who flew during the plague and work (Indirectly) On Saturday it became unprofitable, according to sources at El Al, the decision was made regardless of the fact that the company has meanwhile been acquired by the ultra-Orthodox Rosenberg family.

Despite this, EL AL received quite a bit of criticism over the move.

An organization called the "Secular Forum" even threatened it with a boycott, which of course did not succeed and not only because it was unnecessary, since the decision of the company's management was made on a business basis and I did not go.

Not only did the secular forum protest, it turns out that the person who still did not like the decision was the chairman of the company's air crew, El Al captain, Ran Alkabetz

. They have hardly existed since the Corona broke out.) In December, he wrote a letter to the company's CEO, Avigal Soreq, asking him to stop including staff for work on weekends, including training activities and more.

Alkabetz signed his letter threatening that the company should completely stop all ovulation of the company's air crew members for activities during the weekends until the end of February 2022.

The company immediately replied in a letter claiming that EL AL management was in negotiations with the Histadrut and committees Which were before her eyes before the decision was made, including to the financial advisor of the company's pilots committee.

Today (Thursday) Alkabetz issued the same letter again to the company's CEO, in which he states that the activity was stopped "for religious and value reasons" and even claims that the decision means "harm to the salaries and lifestyles of EL AL pilots." Sun-Dor on Saturday, or alternatively, to refrain on Saturdays from any other activity of the air crews in the company.

Power in ideological disguise

El Al's story, it seems, reflects what is happening in the field of labor relations not only in the company: a workers' committee that acts forcefully in front of management, threatens and even disrupts the company's operations and makes it difficult for its management to make necessary financial decisions to improve profits.

In the past year, El Al has fired about a third of the company's manpower, presented a recovery plan that included massive investments by its controlling shareholders and more - as a condition for receiving assistance from the State of Israel (a large part of it is purchased by the company). And even tries to steer an economic issue in the direction of values and present the controlling shareholders in the company as those who have forced their lifestyles on the "secular majority" in the company and among its customers.

Alkabetz signs his letter by stating that the recovery in the aviation industry, with the decline of the corona plague, is a business opportunity to rehabilitate its business.
