Anne-Cécile Mailfert: “In terms of equality, many things have only been done halfway”

2022-02-21T15:03:59.061Z

On February 26, the president of the Women's Foundation will kick off the Train for Equality, which will travel through nine cities in as many days. With a dual objective: to defend women's rights and to take stock of the five-year period that is coming to an end.

Animations, conferences, exhibitions, meetings with activists... All on rails.

On February 26, in Paris, the Women's Foundation will launch its Train for Equality, which will stop in nine French cities until the symbolic date of March 8.

Its cars, equipped to accommodate activists, visitors and schoolchildren, will be run by several associations fighting for women's rights.

A few weeks before the presidential election, the project is also an opportunity for Anne-Cécile Mailfert to take stock of the past five years... and the list of emergencies for the next ones.

Maintenance.

- Why did you choose a converted train?

Anne-Cecile Mailfert.

We wanted to animate this presidential campaign with a visible and noisy object, whose simple watchword: “

Listen to us!

".

The objective was to create an object that was both unifying, since large associative networks participate in this project, and able to move around, to mobilize local associations.

The preparation of the train required intense but joyful work, to make the cause of women exist in an innovative and colorful way.

And we are delighted with the result.

Will presidential candidates visit it?

We contacted all the campaign teams and most expressed their interest.

We will welcome them with pleasure.

A few weeks before the election, what is your assessment of the five-year term in terms of equality?

Many things have only been done halfway, with measures that are neither sufficient nor strong enough.

The generalization of the filing of complaints at the hospital for women victims of violence, for example, is a good measure.

Only the police stations cannot apply it, for lack of laptops.

The same goes for the confiscation of weapons held by violent spouses: the police do not have the necessary computer files.

So yes, there was a political momentum, but in terms of efficiency, effectiveness and ambition, we are far from the mark.

Especially since certain measures, which we have been asking for for five years, have still not seen the light of day.

This government has made little progress on professional equality or sex education for young people, for example.

Gold,

When it comes to women's rights, when things don't progress, they tend to regress.

Violence is reinventing itself, new forms are appearing, such as cyberbullying.

There's still much to do.

Anne-Cécile Mailfert, President of the Women's Foundation

The budget of the State Secretariat for Women's Rights has nevertheless doubled in five years...

Yes, which relieved the associations and allowed good things, such as making 3919 (

national listening number for victims of violence, editor's note)

available 7 days a week, for example.

But, if it has increased, the budget allocated to the fight against violence amounts to around 300 million euros per year.

We are asking for a billion.

Even if it has doubled, the budget of the Secretary of State remains the thinnest of all, its amount is ridiculous compared to that of other ministries.

These are still only small steps.

We observe this clearly during our ministerial meetings: we propose many solutions and only two or three, the least expensive and the easiest to implement, are retained.

You just launched a petition to demand 10 emergency measures...

These proposals are not new, most candidates have already heard them and support them.

But we are asking them for a clear commitment and immediate implementation, within the first 100 days of the five-year term.

It is urgent: it is now that women victims of violence are in mortal danger, we have already waited too long.

The same goes for the education of children: we must get started right away, not put it off constantly.

What do you ask in priority from the next government?

To increase the means, to establish better management of the laws and to create a specialized, trained and voluntary body.

We would like a national coordination to see the light of day, on the same model as those in charge of the fight against terrorism, for example.

It would follow the progress of the various projects and the objectives set, would ensure that the procedures are effective and the measures really applied.

It is too infuriating to see laws passed without concrete results.
