Bennett will wake up, the war on the cost of living is more important than in Ukraine

In Naftali Bennett's dream, he serves as a mediator who, thanks to his skills, manages to end the war on European soil.

In reality he heads a country that for most of its citizens is foreign news, while our real battle is over how to successfully move the shopping cart at the checkout without impoverishing

The war in Ukraine has occupied the agenda: we are all aware of what Putin is saying and what Zlansky is answering.

We all know how to guess when and how it will end and even wonder how Putin's aggression and the Russian-Chinese axis will shape the geopolitical map.

The problem is that while Naftali Bennett, the Israeli prime minister, relishes the possibility that he may be invited to mediate between the hawks and most of his talent he will be able to formulate understandings, gain world recognition, perhaps also the Nobel Peace Prize and most importantly - prove to Nemesis Benjamin Netanyahu a world-renowned statesman. He does not notice that the Israeli economy is running away from him again - and until he ends the war in Ukraine, he will be defeated by the war that threatens almost every home in Israel: the war on the cost of living.

The economic issues appear to be due to the Achilles heel of the current government, precisely the one that managed to pass a budget, which tried to formulate a package deal in the economy, update the minimum wage and promote some important reforms.

So I've due to Achilles?

Very simple: after the budget transfer was over and after Golem received compliments on the great (without cynicism) performance of the Israeli economy, it became clear that the citizens, whose supermarket shopping bill swelled every month, refused to admire the macro indices.

Or in other words: what do we get from economic vegetation if we do not finish the month?

And to continue the line: what do we care about the war in Eastern Europe, when our real war is how to get through another month of spending without getting calls from the bank.

The government known as the "government of change" has already been in this movie - and even really recently.

About two months ago, senior officials revealed that while they are engaged in matters that they consider world-famous, the public, that is, those outside Twitter, are not at all interested in political progress or the removal of the Jarrah discourse. An investigation into the submarine interests him as much as last year's snow.

What is important to the public?

Cost of living.

Maybe this is the bad influence of social networks, maybe the only place where the debate between left or right in Israel still takes place, but the public is simply not there.

The price of "occupation" or "annexation" does not interest him.

The prices in the supermarket, exactly.

Gentlemen, inflation is back

The war in Ukraine and the economic price that will impose economic sanctions on Russia from the West come at the most inopportune moment on the part of the various governments, and Israel in particular: amid alarming rise in inflation and a surge in real estate prices coming after two years of dealing with the virus and its effects.

And in Hebrew translation: updating the minimum wage from NIS 5,300 to NIS 6,000, one of the steps the Israeli government boasts of (although it extends over almost 4 years, ie until December 31, 2005), has already been almost completely eroded due to price increases and inflation

. Two-three months of price increases (the last of which, tonight at midnight, a jump in fuel prices to a 14-year high) - and look at how the whole package of incentives and benefits proudly announced by the three tenors: Bennett, Lieberman and Barbibai, the last time they realized they were late in fighting the cost of living Almost all.

Inflation is the worst thing that can happen to the economy and although in Israel it is relatively moderate in most of our reference countries, it still exists - and the fear is that it will continue to soar.

With the exception of natural disasters or wars with thousands of casualties, God forbid, there is nothing that affects social peace more than inflation.

Continuation of this, even if the rise remains moderate, produces a social unrest that should worry the government most of all - even in the utilitarian aspect of its political survival.

The war for the perpetrators of the cost of living

In reformed countries, the finance minister would pull the wing of the prime minister's suit and say to him: "This is the economy, idiot" (in a paraphrase of the famous saying, not out of disrespect for the prime minister), but in recent days the finance minister has been silenced. His premonition that war would not break out between Russia and Ukraine.

Bennett must wake up - and soon - before he discovers that patriotism has become the last resort of the factors of cost of living: the agricultural lobby will say that the war in Ukraine proves why Israel must rely only on Israeli agriculture, the manufacturers will explain why they should not be so dependent on imports, importers With the transportation costs, they will explain that the war in Europe will only make them even more expensive - and that is even before we heard the security system howling that here it has been proven once again why we need a strong army that wins every war for monetary bonuses.

All of these are just waiting to take over the discourse, while Bennett fantasizes about the phone that will come or not and turn him into a statesman "like Bibi."

If he waits too long, he will find that while engaged in other wars, he has stumbled upon the only war in which it is important for Israelis to win: the war on the cost of living.
