"If I want to be health minister, I have to jump in the pool"

He grew up in an atmosphere of contentment with little, served in combat engineering - and the medic course he was sent to, opened a window for him into the world of medicine.

Name

: Prof. Roni Gamzo, 56, CEO of Ichilov.

Who I am

: I have a combination combined with sensitivity to man and social adversity, I aim to perform with inner truth, drawn to challenges and complexity.

Roots

: Award. Father, orphaned by his father at A young man, he immigrated to Israel alone in the 1950s as a teenager and was absorbed in Kibbutz Maagan Michael, his grandmother came to visit several times. Yemenite jewelry.

At first he worked from a small room in the house and after a few years moved to a workshop.

My maternal grandfather, engaged in pharmacy in Shiraz and when they immigrated to Israel for Zionist motives, worked in a printing press at the newspaper.

The parents met through acquaintances in the community, got married, and Mom helped with the business.

I would help him stroke stones, smear the glue or sprinkle the solder powder.

I had no artistic sense, but a mental ability and a desire to learn certainly did.

"We live in a sense of modesty, that there is not enough and work hard for what is there" (Photo: Reuven Castro)

My childhood

: We lived in a sense of modesty, that there is not enough and work hard for what is.

There was no shortage, but a sense of urgency that taught us the importance of hard work and achievement.

I loved football and running, I was always looking for an opportunity to go downstairs and I would run to the grocery store.

I went through all the youth movements, from the Scouts to Hashomer Hatzair, and in the elementary end I was looking for something technological and came to the trend of instrumentation and medical control, a combination of electronics, instrumentation and computers, with a very faint connection to medicine.

I enlisted in a military reserve in computer engineering, when the PC started to get stronger, and eventually gave up, enlisted in combat engineering and at the end of my training the MM sent me to a paramedic course at BAD 10. The ability to heal, help, understand pathologies, how the body is injured and how to repair it , Was much more sophisticated than computers.

I went to an officers' course and there I acquired the ability to command and train.

medicine

: I started studying medicine at Ben Gurion and after two years I felt that I was not realizing my management abilities and the curiosity and desire to explore.

In the third year I moved to Tel Aviv and there I was given the opportunity to combine research in my free time, combined with medicine and health systems management. Thus was born the combination of management, research and medicine. Later I also studied law.

"I submitted to the director of the department an administrative plan I had written and it rolled over to Barbash, who ran the hospital, and he appointed me VP of Economics" (Photo: Reuven Castro)

Career 1

: While specializing in gynecology at Ichilov, I completed my managerial degrees and at the same time did exercises for myself on how I would manage things, what is missing and what can be done better.

When there was a managerial crisis at the Liss Maternity Hospital, I submitted to the director of the department an administrative plan I had written and it rolled over to Barbash, who ran the hospital, and he appointed me VP of Economics.

Karen Brunner

: My spouse is in charge of the Department of Health In the Assuta Medical Division. We are not officially married, we have a girl and we will move to Tel Aviv very soon.

Career 2

: After five years I moved to the Netherlands following Karen who was studying for a master's degree there.

I strengthened my managerial skills in a course at the INSIDE in Paris and when we returned to Israel I was given extensive responsibility for the operation of the hospital.

In 2010 I was appointed Director General of the Ministry of Health, during the doctors' strike and the polio crisis, and at the end of the job I went on a cooling year and was appointed to the position in Information, Big Data and Innovation in the OECD Health Division

. And the most dynamic, surrounded by significant private medicine and has the best doctors in the country.Development is not a simple challenge because the land is expensive and the growth to height is complex.

"Then I said to Bercy: 'Let me manage the nursing home crisis'" (Photo: Reuven Castro)

Corona

: Informally I was involved in conversations and deliberations with Bar Simantov and Grotto, in my role as former office manager, and then I told Bercy: 'Let me manage the nursing home crisis.' Nimrod Maimon.

Projector

: I started the job at the end of July 2020. There was chaos, mistrust, confusion, a new government, Israel snatches the first second wave in the world, the economy stops again, people get angry when they talk about a second closure and then think of a projector. People with an administrative record feel a call to the flag and when they approached me, I immediately stood up.

I was happy every moment I was there, I was full of satisfaction and self-fulfillment.

For years I studied management, I gained tools and with such training you are ready for such a position.

True, you are never allowed to realize everything you want, so you take and do what you can without being considered, even though in politics there is complexity and consideration with you.

I did not give anyone the feeling that I was a defeatable person, I did not leave and surrender.

And in the end if I decided not to go to Uman, did not go to Uman, if it was decided on a closure it happened on holidays because it was the right timing.

"Every wave that comes, will encounter the wall of the medicinal and natural vaccine, both reduce the possibility of a large and powerful wave" (Photo: Reuven Castro)

Sixth wave

: I'm less afraid of him.

We are in a situation where every wave that comes, will encounter the wall of the medicinal and natural vaccine, both of which reduce the possibility of a large and powerful wave.

We will continue to manage the corona without closures.

Hospital

budgeting: Health system budgeting is always lacking and this is a global problem, and for us, because the public system is sharper.

I'm not in favor of steam.

The health care system needs more budgets, but it is not whining, it is functioning.

Bennett was in a big dilemma in the fourth wave and the way I proposed to deal with it was to strengthen the hospitals, to demand that they stand in the breach, to give them a sense that you are behind them and to demand from them unconditionally to fulfill their duty.

Dealing with the plague

: From March 2020 my line in Ichilov was not of panic or systemic paralysis, but a broadcast of resilience to politicians and citizens and its actual proof that we will not collapse and we can stand it.

Doctors' organizations and other hospital administrators were angry with me, what he says we will get along with.

I thought then and I think even today, that this is a national task that is not conditional on anything.

We have an excellent healthcare system, including the HMOs.

That's why on April 19, in the first wave, we opened all the hospital services and I did not agree to accept the panic that was broadcast on television.

It is much easier to sit in studios and interpret panic, than to say that there will be no catastrophe, because if you say that they will be waiting for you in the corner.

We gave assurance to the previous and current Prime Minister, probably after the vaccinations, that everything would be fine. I waited with the second closure until a time when it could not be postponed any longer, despite the pressure.

"The number of doctors should double today" (Photo: Reuven Castro)

The late Moshe Harazi

: Corona patient whose tube was disconnected from the ventilator without the staff noticing causing his death, a severe blow to the wing. There was a malfunction that should not have happened. And

aware of the work processes.

I stood in the front, took responsibility and was torn. I was honest, sensitive, close, almost a member of his family and we are in a warm relationship even today. Mutual love and I hurt their loss, regardless of claims. Responsibility, because the public is not stupid and the system is not stupid.

Gamzo report

: Deals with the workforce in the health system and the decrease in the number of doctors in Israel and was submitted to the Minister a month and a half ago.

When I was the director general of the firm in 2011, about 300 students were added to the 450 who were here. Since then, two faculties of medicine have been opened, in North and Ariel - and the number of doctors should double today. The system understands that it should not cost much money. Will not block the move.

"I have an orderly mishnah, I'm accepted in the system, but the only problem is that I'm not a politician. If I want to be health minister, I have to jump in the pool" (Photo: Reuven Castro)

Academy

: This is the fire burning in me: to ask the questions, to teach, to be involved in the development of the next generation, it turns me on and I live it.

The frequency I teach is not high, but whenever I am asked to give a lesson, lecture or course, whether it is in or out of university, I show up.

I motivated a lot of research in the field of corona and I was not looking to be in the line of authors and also in Ichilov I push the research with all my might.

Health

: I'm following up on the surgery I underwent to remove a cancerous growth near the eye, and in the meantime, tap tap tap, everything's fine.

Minister of Health: I have a regular deputy, I am accepted in the system, but the only problem is that I am not a politician.

If I want to be health minister, I have to jump in the pool.

I'm told, run for politics, and I do not deny that it will happen but at the moment it is not on my desk.

Tel Aviv Mayor

: A fascinating role that fits my skills.

There is an incumbent mayor who wants to run again and that raises questions for me.

The job is within my decision radius, but running now it means trying to oust an incumbent mayor and that is another consideration.

"The Treasury does not understand the essence of health corporations" (Photo: Reuven Castro)

Ichilov WELL

: The Treasury does not understand the essence of health corporations, a business entity that makes money.

I'm willing to give it up as long as they give me the flexibility I do not have.

They do not want to turn us into a government company that has flexibility and if it is in deficit, it is parked in the treasury.

They want me to run like a government office and come up with claims that we have health corporations that can respond quickly.

Leisure

: I ran the

entire Tel Aviv marathon, an hour and a half of torrential rain, I weigh 60 kilos and the wind just blew me away

.

Moving to another place soon.I want to contribute and find the right places where my skills will be reflected. The

full interview with Prof. Gamzo will also be published in Maariv's "Business" supplement, 4.3.
