London-Sana

Official statistics showed that the rate of inflation in Britain rose to its highest level in 30 years during the past month in light of the worsening cost of living crisis.

And the British Guardian newspaper quoted the Office for National Statistics as saying that “consumer prices rose by 6.2 percent on an annual basis last month, compared to an increase of 5.5 percent in last January, the highest rate since March 1992.”

The Bank of England raised its annual inflation forecast last week to a peak above 8 percent, more than four times during the period between next April and June, and regulated household energy bills are set to jump by more than half next month.

Core inflation, which strips out the direct impact of food and energy costs, rose to 5.2 percent from 4.4 percent last month, also its highest level since March 1992.

Inflation pressures continued to rise, with manufacturers increasing their prices by 10.1 percent, the largest annual increase since September 2008.

Britain's inflation rate rose to 4.4 percent in January, its highest level since records began in 1997.
