Claudio Descalzi, CEO of the Italian energy company Eni, stressed today that replacing Russian energy is not an easy task and that Europe has never thought of a strategy for its energy security.
Reuters quoted Descalzi as saying at an energy forum in the United Arab Emirates that "Europe is an empty box with regard to energy and does not have its own energy strategy and we have never thought of an energy security strategy."
Descalzi added that gas supplies represent a major problem in Europe, where the 27-nation bloc depends on Russia for 40 percent of its gas needs, and that the search for another alternative is not an easy task, especially after Russia asked Eni to pay in rubles for gas, which is not an issue. It is included in existing contracts for European countries.
Earlier this month, Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed the Central Bank, the government and Gazprom to convert the system of payments for supplies of Russian gas to unfriendly countries into Russian rubles instead of dollars and euros.
