By drawing their Covid vaccines in less than a year, Moderna and BioNTech have knocked out Big Pharma.
Exit GSK, Sanofi and MSD, the world leaders in vaccines, excluded from the race after successive setbacks and delays.
The bet of the two biotechs on messenger RNA, a technology which had never yet led to the marketing of a product, was a winner.
Faced with the health emergency, this choice made it possible to go very quickly when it took until then ten years on average to develop a vaccine.

Moderna and BioNTech, who had been working on RNA for ten years, saw their tenacity rewarded.
But not only.
The risk taking was rewarded.
Thus Albert Bourla, the boss of Pfizer, dared to bet on a biotech (BioNtech) which had never yet proven itself.
Conversely, Sanofi, GSK and MSD have in turn declined the advances of Moderna, which offered them to team up on messenger RNA.
