Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck puts Gazprom Germania's previous business in gas trading and the operation of natural gas storage facilities in the hands of the Federal Network Agency.
Habeck announced that his ministry had ordered this by legal order.
The Russian parent company Gazprom announced on Friday that it would give up its German subsidiary.
Apparently, the group had tried to withdraw the subsidiary from the government's access.
Habeck justified the step with the unclear legal situation and a “violation of the reporting requirements of the Foreign Trade Ordinance”.
The authorities should have been informed about the new owner, it said.
Now the Federal Network Agency is to ensure “proper management”.
"We want to take all necessary steps to continue to ensure security of supply," said Klaus Müller, President of the Federal Network Agency.
