The head of the Federal Agency for German Energy Networks, Klaus Muller, has warned that the acute gas shortage caused by the events in Ukraine will have serious consequences for the German population.

Russia Today quoted Mueller as saying: “Unfortunately, it cannot be excluded that we will have to make decisions that will have serious consequences for companies, jobs and supply chains in entire regions,” calling on the population to reduce gas consumption.

For his part, a report issued by the German Economy Ministry warned that Germany will have to stop operating some of its power plants if it ends coal imports from Russia.

"An immediate ban on coal imports from Russia will lead to a coal shortage after a few weeks," the ministry said in its report, noting that Russia's share in Germany's coal imports would fall to 25 percent in the next few years from the current level of about 50 percent due to changes in recent contracts.

German Finance Minister Christian Lindner had confirmed his country's inability to dispense with Russian gas at the present time, pointing out that the sanctions imposed on Moscow in this sector would harm Europe more than Russia.
