Caution, facts along the way: Ashdod Port CEO responds to allegations

There is no connection between the cost of living and traffic jams in Israeli ports.

In light of various statements and statements in the media regarding the activities of Israeli ports in general and the port of Ashdod in particular, I would like to present the facts as they are, for the benefit of the readers.

Let's start with the fact that the attempt to connect the cost of living with the traffic jams in Israeli ports does not hold water.

Even misleading.

Although we are a significant link in the maritime supply chain, the increase in the price of raw materials and a jump of more than 1000 percent in maritime transport prices (the cost of transporting a container from Asia to Ashdod jumped from $ 2,000 to $ 20,000) are the causes of rising prices.

And every economist knows this, starting with the Ministry of Finance.

The "cork" in the ports, in the vernacular, is not related to this, despite interested parties seeking to connect things.

And maybe this is the place to explain, what is that "cork"?

This is the operational queue at Israeli ports, that is, ships that have not scheduled and arranged in advance for unloading at the port (like the other ships) and therefore are required to wait in line for unloading based on the available workloads and loads at the port.

It is similar to a person who arrives without making an appointment with a doctor, and is asked to wait until those who have made an appointment are treated, and only then will the doctor be available to treat him.

makes sense.

By the way, the operational queue has always been here, but the corona has led to a global shift in the maritime value chain, which has caused many ships, for economic and other reasons, to arrive due to unprecedented demand and full accumulation.

For our part, we do our best to provide the best service to these ships as well, and to that end we have also recruited and trained additional personnel with the support of the Ministry of Transportation and the Histadrut.

The fact that the port of Ashdod achieved record results in terms of the volume of unloading in the work year 2021, proves well that it has nothing to do with the quality of the port's functioning.

Some are trying to portray Ashdod Port workers in a negative light "as beeps" about the situation while describing incorrect facts.

The company's management went out for an intensive day of discussions about opening the ports market to competition and not to "vacation";

Customers are at the center of our aspirations for better service and have never been “reprimanded” by an importer;

And there is no "Italian strike" in the port, because then we would not have been able to break the unloading records.

Convenient and pleasant to flog the employees of the Port of Ashdod, it already corresponds with the image of the strong and powerful committees.

Which was probably true at the time.

The same Ashdod Port workers who are not joining the effort are the same workers in Shomer Chomot unloading containers and equipment while missiles hovered over their heads when most of the economy was in shelters.

These are the same workers who at the height of the Corona, who residents were afraid to go shopping at the supermarket, worked hard and unloaded deliveries and food for Passover and broke every possible unloading and loading record in the port since its inception.

Ashdod Port has undergone an administrative, service and business revolution.

Every interested party is welcome to come and see and be impressed.

Are there traffic jams only in Israeli ports?

Certainly not - ports around the world are congested and most of them in a more difficult situation, given the global crisis in the logistics chain.

Above every stage and every possible medium of communication I reiterate that on the two new ports that were built, and were supposed to open a year ago, to get under the stretcher and assist in the national effort.

We have no problem with that.

On the contrary.

And if you want to ask a really relevant question about the cost of living and the seaports, then it is worth asking, in fact, why the new private ports do not help reduce the traffic jams in Israeli ports?

That the best port will win.
