Millions of short-time workers, government aid programs worth billions: The pandemic also hit the German economy for large parts of 2021.

At the same time, many stock corporations generated high profits - and are now paying out a record amount to their shareholders: This year they will pay around 70 billion euros in dividends.
This is the result of the dividend study by the investor protection association DSW and the Institute for Strategic Finance at the FOM University.
Accordingly, the increase compared to last year is almost 50 percent and 22 percent compared to the previous record year 2019. As far as dividends are concerned, “the pandemic is over,” said study author Christian W. Röhl.
With 6.15 billion euros, a group pays out the highest total sum to its shareholders that is not listed in any stock index: the Hamburg shipping company Hapag Lloyd, which is owned 30 percent each by the Chilean shipping company CSAV and Kühne Holding.
They each receive around two billion euros.
The third largest shareholder is the city of Hamburg, which receives around 860 million euros in dividends.
A total of more than 50 billion euros will be paid out by the 40 companies represented in the Dax, 47 percent more than in 2021. Mercedes-Benz is the frontrunner with almost 5.4 billion euros, followed by Allianz (4.4 billion euros) and BMW (3rd place). .8 billion euros).
Volkswagen is close behind with 3.78 billion euros, Siemens ranks fifth with 3.4 billion euros.
This means that the majority of the dividends paid out by Dax companies are attributable to the automotive industry.
The companies listed in the MDax pay around seven billion euros in dividends.
According to the study, the distributions account for an average of 41 percent of the profits.
This largely corresponds to the historical pattern, according to study author Röhl.
