Comeback for the chocolate Easter bunny: The confectionery industry in Germany produced around 239 million chocolate Easter bunnies this year.
That's a good eleven percent more than in the previous year, according to the Federal Association of the German Confectionery Industry (BDSI), based on a survey of its member companies.
Last year, the corona pandemic caused many family celebrations and Easter celebrations to be cancelled.
Around half of the chocolate bunnies - around 119 million pieces - have been delivered to the German food trade as well as to department stores and specialty shops in the Federal Republic in the past few weeks.
The rest went abroad, mainly to neighboring European countries, but also to the USA, Canada, Australia and South Africa.
The classic Easter bunny made from milk chocolate was still the most popular.
Easter bunnies made from bittersweet or white chocolate and decorative figures such as little lambs, carrots or chicks made from chocolate are also trendy, as are chocolate eggs.
Despite the difficulties in procuring packaging materials in particular, the manufacturers have managed to produce all Easter products ordered at home and abroad for the 2022 season as desired, the BDSI announced.
Whether this will also be possible in the future is still open in view of the shortage of raw materials, which has been aggravated by the war in Ukraine.
