Strike by Polish air traffic controllers could disrupt European air traffic

From May 1, around 300 flights per day passing through Polish airspace will have to be rerouted due to a lack of controllers.


Following a disagreement with air traffic controllers over wages and working conditions, the Polish government has decided to significantly reduce the number of flights allowed in the Warsaw area, starting May 1.

Air traffic controllers based in Warsaw manage about 3,000 flights a day, 700 of which fly over Polish airspace.

Of these, around 300 will have to be diverted due to the expected shortage of controllers, Eurocontrol, the EU's airspace manager, warned in a statement relayed by Politico.

The agency is currently discussing with its partners how to manage these flights.

The Polish government's order, published overnight from Monday to Tuesday, still favors certain international destinations, including Paris, London, New York, Frankfurt, Berlin, Rome, Barcelona, ​​Amsterdam and Dubai.
