The Israeli food company Wilk (formerly Biomilk) announces a global breakthrough: the Technion and the Weizmann Institute confirm that fat, protein and lactose components were found in a sample of the milk that is produced as "cultured" milk through the company's systems.
This makes Wilk the first company in the world to produce cultured milk from real ingredients of human and animal milk.
Today the company updated on the unprecedented progress in development and research activities, which is a significant milestone on the road to cell-based cultured milk production.
The announcement came after an independent inspection of the laboratories of the Weizmann Institute and the Technological Institute of Israel, the Technion, found that a sample of milk produced as "cultured" milk using the company's systems, using the company's registered patent, found three components: fat, protein and lactose.
Following the announcement, the company's share jumped by 8% and trading in it was stopped.

The future: not only cultured milk in the supermarket but also breast milk produced in the laboratory (Photo: Danny Bachar)
For years, Israel boasted the tremendous output of dairy cows, which put Israel in first place in milk production per cow.
But times are changing - and in parallel with the cow that came off the supermarket shelves this week, which is the symbol of the famous chocolate in Israel, it is possible that milk produced from cows is also a thing of the past.
Although this is, for the time being, only a research breakthrough, it is difficult to overstate its importance: this is the first time that scientists have succeeded in producing cultured milk in the laboratory.
This means that WILK has all the most essential components of milk: protein, lactose and fat for the production of cell-based cultured milk.
Moreover, it was found that the cells secrete identical components of dairy products, so that this is a seal confirming that the company has reached the stage of producing a diverse production capacity of human dairy products (breast milk) and animals.
The production of real components of human and animal milk will allow the company to combine the above components in dairy products as well as dairy companies and formulas for global babies, improve their nutritional offerings, without compromising on taste or texture, and above all, in an environmentally friendly manufacturing process.
