Anesthetics, curare, anti-inflammatories… Two years ago, at the start of the Covid pandemic, the French discovered with horror that the most basic medicines could run out.
Public opinion was becoming aware of our dependence on Asia, China and India in the lead, where 60% of the active ingredients are manufactured – these chemical products which give medicines their therapeutic properties.
“Out of 4,000 active ingredients in Europe, around 800 are in regular shortage.
And the list keeps growing.
However, a quarter of these molecules are used in the composition of essential drugs for patients”,
explains Pierre Luzeau, Managing Director of Seqens, the French leader in fine pharmaceutical chemicals.
The crisis in Ukraine and the logistical problems created by the recontainment of parts of China only underscore the dangers of this dependency today.
