The participants in the first conference to invest in renewable energies and electricity, which will be held at the Jasmine House Hotel in Damascus, discussed a number of issues related to investment opportunities, challenges facing investors, the facilities provided to them, the types of energies present in Syria, their economic feasibility and their repercussions on society.

In the first session chaired by the Minister of Electricity, Eng. Ghassan Al-Zamil, the Assistant Minister of Electricity, Dr. Eng. Sinjar Tohme, presented the challenges facing the electricity sector and the importance of private investment in it in partnership between the public and private sectors, pointing to the need for large investments to meet the rehabilitation and development of stations and networks, and the gap between electricity production costs and their selling tariffs. And the difficulty of contracting with companies and implementing contracts.

The Director of Planning and International Cooperation in the Ministry, Eng. Adham Ballan, gave a presentation on the national strategy to invest in renewable energies, which aims to increase the contribution to the energy balance on both the demand and supply sides, and improve the efficiency of its use in various sectors, in addition to developing generation stations and the current electrical network and creating new job opportunities. For professionals of the younger generation.

In turn, the Director of Electricity Sector Regulation, Dr. Muhammad Bassam Darwish, talked about the legislation governing investment in the electricity sector, which encourages investors to establish projects for the generation and distribution of electricity and renewable energies, while the engineer, Nour Al-Khadra, talked about the methods of contracting renewable energy projects and purchasing energy produced from them.

The second session dealt with investment opportunities in the field of renewable energies, presented by the Director General of the National Center for Energy Research, Dr. Eng. Younis Ali, in which he outlined the types of renewable energy sources available, the investment map for suitable sites for projects, and the most important investment opportunities currently offered by the ministry, while the Director General of the General Organization for Electricity Generation, Engineer Ali Haifa Investment projects in the field of conventional energy generation, rehabilitation and expansion of existing power stations and proposed investment methods.

In turn, the Director General of the Electricity Transmission and Distribution Corporation, Eng. Fawaz Al-Zaher, gave an overview of the electricity transmission and distribution network, the damages it sustained, the reality of the rehabilitation of network components, private investment opportunities in the distribution network, the legal and legislative structure, and implementation mechanisms.

The Director of Investment in the Ministry, Engineer Hiyam Al-Imam, addressed the licensing procedures for investment projects in terms of applicable standards and general requirements, and the need to conduct annual examinations on renewable energy projects to ensure that the project meets performance standards.

In a statement to SANA reporter, Maher Al-Zarad, the financial director of the General Organization for Electricity Transmission and Distribution, said that the legislative environment today allows the investor to participate with the public sector, especially with renewable energies, stressing the possibility of the ministry to contract with any investor directly and pay according to the prices issued by the Central Bank of Syria.

Dr. Moataz Dalati, one of the participants, pointed out that his participation in the conference is to present new projects that depend on the use of geothermal energies in addition to other energies such as biogas.

In turn, university professor Dr. Muhammad Kardab, a specialist in renewable energies, stressed that the conference is an opportunity for rapprochement between investors and decision-makers for dialogue and discussion about the positive points of supporting them and the negative ones to address them.

Chairman of the Board of Directors of a renewable energy company in As-Suwayda Governorate, Dr. Samer Mazyad Alwan, indicated that participation in the conference is an opportunity to learn about the experiences of others and cooperate with them, pointing out that his company is working to obtain a license for a wind farm in As-Suwayda with a capacity of 10 megawatts annually, and today it is in the process of licensing a solar hybrid project. And windy with a capacity of 211 megawatts.

The two-day conference will continue its work tomorrow, with the participation of a number of ministries, authorities, and Syrian, Arab and foreign investors.
