According to the Finnish state gas company Gasum, Gazprom has announced that it will stop gas imports from Russia to the Nordic country from Saturday morning.
"It is very unfortunate that the natural gas deliveries under our supply contract are now being discontinued," company boss Mika Wiljanen is quoted as saying in a statement.
The move comes just days after Finland and its Scandinavian neighbor Sweden applied in Brussels to join the western defense alliance NATO.
The effects of the announced delivery stop are still unclear.
"However, we have carefully prepared for this situation and provided that there are no disruptions in the gas transmission network, we will be able to supply all our customers with gas in the coming months," said Gasum boss Wiljanen.
In the coming months, customers should be supplied from other sources via the Balticconnector pipeline, which connects Finland with Estonia.
Gasum's gas filling stations would continue to operate normally.
